The Effect of Topical Minoxidil Therapy in Alopecia


Abstract
The clinical effect of 2% minoxidil solution was tested in male pattern alopecia and alopecia areata. Thirty nine patients were included in this study. Patients were treated with topical application of 2% minoxidil solution twice a day for 24 weeks.
The results were as follows:
1. In male pattern alopecia, vellus hair or terminal hair regrowth was noted in 8 of 16 patients(50%) on 12 weeks after treatment and 10 of 13 patients(77%) on 24 weeks after treatment, which was statistically significant compared to the placebo group(20%,25%)
2. In alopecia areata, vellus hair or terminal hair regrowth was noted in, 8 of 14 patients (58%) on 12 weeks after treatment and 7 of 9 patients(78%) on 24 weeks after treatment, which was statistically significant compared to those of placebo group(25%, 0%).
3. Two of 39 patients had itching sensation and erythema due to minoxidil solution application.
From the results, we conclude that topical minoxidil therapy is effective and safe for male pattern alopecia and alopecia areata.
